The Oxbridge Online Academy Astronomy and Astrophysics course blends lectures, seminars, personal research, and project work that explore some fundamental questions about the universe: How did it begin, and what is our place within it? What is time, and will it ever come to an end?
Participants go on a journey through space, from the infinitesimal components to the unimaginably large, addressing topics such as atoms, the Big Bang, galaxy formation, the history of our solar system, black holes, orbital mechanics, and string theory. The course culminates in an individual project.
Session One: July 5–16, 2021
Through dynamic workshops, exercises, and project work, Oxbridge Online Academy students in this course are introduced to the worlds of business and finance. Alongside learning about compound interest, portfolio theory, and the time value of money, they are initiated into how financial markets operate as well as how finance is used in everyday businesses. Participants learn about strategic planning, marketing, economics, finance, and accounting, and work through creating a product-centered company and drafting a business plan.
For their final project, students apply course teachings to create a mock company, which they present to a Shark Tank-style panel. This assignment will mirror the high-pressure, quick-tempo presentations used at colleges, business schools, and startup incubators across the world. Participants will form teams and pitch their companies to the “sharks” whom they will ask to invest in their companies. The teams that attract the sharks’ investment capital will be the winners.
Session One: July 5–16, 2021
Session Two: July 19–30, 2021
Drawing on aspects of criminology, law, psychology, history, sociology, and forensics, the Oxbridge Online Academy Crime and Punishment course explores individual and social theories of crime, philosophies of punishment, criminal profiling, incident analysis, and forensic science.
Through a mix of instruction, seminars, and independent research, students consider how and why society comes to define certain actions as criminal, why people commit crimes, the influence of the media upon perceptions of crime, and issues of race and gender within the context of different criminal justice systems. Using case studies, they go on to determine how different systems and epochs have addressed crime, how they are addressing it now, and how they should be addressing it in the future.
The Oxbridge Online Academy Engineering course is devised to help students interested in the field develop analytical and practical engineering skills that they can incorporate into the way they approach problems in their everyday lives.
Working from case studies and through interactive workshops, participants acquire insight into the different engineering disciplines, discover basic engineering principles, and, working in teams, get their first taste of the creative design process: learning how to brainstorm, evaluate, develop, and present ideas. The course culminates with students creating and presenting their original designs.
Session Two: July 19–30, 2021
Participants in the Oxbridge Online Academy International Relations course will be introduced to different schools of thought that explain and make sense of the political, economic, and social interactions of our globalized world. Working from case studies, they go on to study various aspects of interstate relations before switching to a more human-centered approach and addressing different global challenges, such as refugee crises, sectarian conflicts, climate change, and, of course, infectious diseases.
Operating in groups and independently, students will reflect upon how these challenges affect and shape world politics. This course is designed to encourage critical thinking about the conduct of global politics and the extent to which the main paradigms in the literature they read succeed in accurately describing the underlying dynamics of international relations.
Session One: July 5–16, 2021
Session Three: August 2–13, 2021
Oxbridge Online Academy Literary Creation is for students interested in developing their literary skills as well as those who are interested in polishing their capacity for expression. The course will help students who are considering a career in writing and those who simply want to thrive in our globally interconnected world and succeed academically by communicating their ideas with confidence.
Working with a published author, students compose fiction and poetry, exploring their potential as they experiment with new forms and styles of writing, and take inspiration from great models in different genres. They learn about the creative process, editing and revising their work, collaborative criticism, and the practicalities of publication. During the course, participants also develop a portfolio of their best writing and collaborate to design, edit, and publish a digital literary magazine.
Led by a doctor, the Oxbridge Online Academy Medicine course focuses on topics such as the human locomotive structure and function (bone, tissue, axial skeleton, and muscles), respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, and immune systems, as well as how medical conditions impact these systems in the body. Students learn through a mix of lectures, seminars, and research about disease, medical ethics, health care law, and health care delivery in different countries.
The course’s main goal is to give participants an overview of medicine in practice, the opportunities that exist in the field, and how to begin preparing for them. All through the program, students learn to build arguments and critical opinions based on serious research, and, as the course progresses, they become fully confident about presenting their work and defending their opinion in public.
At one level, the Oxbridge Online Academy Politics and Justice course is about the nature of different political models and systems around the world, the ideologies that spawned them, and the arguments political philosophers have presented to explain them. However, it also looks beyond theory to the practice of politics, and, in particular, the active citizenship that has emerged in recent years.
Participants delve into some of the major movements currently challenging the status quo in different countries all over the world. They analyze the short- and long-term factors that sparked these movements, the key role new media played in bringing them to the fore, how different campaigns have been organized (or not), what has been achieved, and how they fit in (and fail to fit in) with prevailing political theories. Concentrating on different popular movements in groups, students evaluate a movement’s possible future and seek to establish what can be achieved, given economic constraints and the challenges of competing societal and legal visions.
The Oxbridge Online Academy Psychology course introduces students to scientific research and the seven branches of psychology—behavioral, cognitive, abnormal and psychoanalytic, developmental, social, personality, and forensic. Participants will also be exposed to key psychological theories and studies, critically engage with the concepts, and consider how they relate to everyday life.
Additionally, students will learn about the stages of psychological development; sociological concepts; the classification of mental disorders, therapies, and pharmacological approaches; as well as psychology and the law.
