Our Faculty

We pair students with leading academics, many of whom hold Rhodes, Gates, or Marshall scholarships which rank among the world's most prestigious and competitive awards. We also employ industry professionals, such as writers, filmmakers, and artists, to teach our courses. We are proud of our past outstanding faculty and are happy to share their biographies below.

Irem Albayrak

BA Boğaziçi University, MSc London School of Economics

Irem is a specialist on women’s economic empowerment in Turkey. She uses cross-sectional datasets and applies logistic regression to assess the causal effect of education on the female labor force. She also has expertise in microeconomics, econometrics, and development and growth.

Andrea Artz
Studio Art

BS City University of New York, MFA University of Leeds

Andrea is a multimedia artist and writer who lives in London. Her recent solo exhibition, The Forest of Query, was shown at the University of Leeds; and it built on successful solo exhibitions in London, Germany, and Austria. She was recently selected to be a resident artist in 2020 at the prestigious Yucca Valley Material Lab in California. Andrea teaches Oxbridge students Studio Art in Oxford during our academic summer program.

Dr. Toluwalese Awoyemi

MBBS University of Ibadan

A Rhodes Scholar, Toluwalase attended the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, where he gained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree with a distinction in Pharmacology. Following graduation in August 2016, he worked as a Medical Intern at the prestigious University College Hospital, Ibadan. He is passionate about healthcare delivery in Nigeria and strongly believes that health-related problems in low-resource settings are best addressed locally. Toluwalase has served as Program Director of CHECK – a non-governmental organization involved in health education, screening and diagnosis, especially in underserved communities. He is also co-founder of The Ganglion Initiative, which is focused on career counselling, mentorship and health education for adolescents.

Charity Bhebhe

BSc, Arizona State University

Charity is pursuing doctoral research in Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge, where she is supported by a prestigious Gates Scholarship. She is an expert in biotechnology, and she is particularly passionate about improving science education in developing communities. She has worked on health delivery programs in Zimbabwe, and on HIV education outreach programs.

Dr. Predrag Bjelogrlic

MD University of Belgrade, MSc University of London

Dr. Bjelogrlic is the Principal Teaching Fellow in Clinical Medicine at the St. Andrews University School of Medicine. After graduating in Medicine from the University of Belgrade, he moved to Britain and completed a number of internships before reading for an MSc in Histopathology in London. Since 1997, he has taught full-time at the University of St. Andrews, where he is a tutor and supervisor as well as the Objective Structured Clinical Examination Manager and the Clinical Medicine Skills Program Coordinator.

Alexandre Blondet

Alexandre has years of experience teaching French as a foreign language at all levels in France, as well as abroad, in India and in Costa Rica. He is also a passionate filmmaker, so he often integrates making art and film into his language courses as a way of teaching expression and conversation.

Abigail Branford

BA Rhodes University, BA University of Cape Town, MPhil University of Cambridge, MSc University of Oxford

She is interested in the role of secondary school education in shaping and reshaping our understanding of society, power and justice. In particular she focuses on history education as a vehicle for dialogue in divided societies. This focus entails engaging with a wide range of fields such as transitional justice, peace education, citizenship, gender, sexuality and postcolonialism.

Salma Daoudi
International Relations

BA Al Akhawayn University, MPhil University of Cambridge

Salma is interested in basic human rights, and in how issues such as access to health and education get little attention because those most affected by them lack a political voice. Her undergraduate dissertation was on political power structures and how they impact the treatment of certain infectious diseases - tuberculosis, HIV and Ebola - while perpetuating structural violence against the most marginalised. Today she works as a researcher at the University of Cambridge, where she is studying health and biosecurity with a prestigious Gates Scholarship.

Gareth Davis
Terrorism & Modern Politics

MA University of Glasgow, MLitt University of St Andrews

Gareth is conducting doctoral research at the University of Glasgow, where he is an expert in the narratives of radicalisation. He is a graduate of the University of St. Andrews, where he worked in the prestigious Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence.

Ana del Arco Ballesteros
Arte/Bellas Artes

BA, MA Universidad de Salamanca

Ana del Arco is a professional artist. She works in several different types of media, but her specialty is sculpture. She regularly lectures at the University in Salamanca and teaches her students about working in the world famous sandstone and granite, which is characteristic of the unique architecture in the city.

Dr. Angel Garcia
Astronomy & Astrophysics

BS Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, MPhil University of Cambridge, PhD University of Cambridge

Angel Garcia is a leading expert in astrophysics and nanotechnology. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering, as well as an M.Phil. in Micro and Nanotechnology Enterprise, both from the University of Cambridge. Before coming to England, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics from Benemaritia Universidad Autonoma de Puebla, Mexico.

Jeremy Allan Hawkins
Creative Writing

MFA University of Alabama, BA Université de Strasbourg, BA Kenyon College

Jeremy is the author of "A Clean Edge," selected by Richard Siken as winner of the 2016 BOAAT Chapbook Contest. Born in New York City and raised in the Hudson Valley, he has been the recipient of a grant from the US Fulbright Program and a teaching fellowship from the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project. His poetry has appeared in Best New Poets 2016, the extended program of the 2018 Venice Biennale di Architettura, and the inaugural 2018 edition of the Rencontre Mondiale de la Poésie, as well as literary journals in the United States and Europe. He lives in France, where he has recently launched the Slight Dérive Reading Series.

Katherina Herold
English Literature

BA University of London, MSt, DPhil, University of Oxford

Katharina is a Stipendiary Lecturer in English at Brasenose College. She trained and worked as a theatre director at the Kammerspiele in Munich, Germany. She has directed plays at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, in Salzburg and Leipzig. She enjoys musical theatre especially baroque opera. Her doctoral thesis investigated the ways in which the East shaped English and German Decadent writing between 1880-1920.

Dr. Jasmine Jagger

BA Cambridge University, MSt University of Oxford, PhD University of Cambridge

Dr. Jasmine Jagger is a former Postdoctoral Researcher and current Stipendiary Lecturer at the Faculty of English and Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. Her research is interested in the energetic bodies of verse and how they behave. She has published articles concerning the overlooked medical contexts of Romantic poetry; lyric poetry in relation to light verse and nonsense; nostalgia in Victorian writing for children; and disorderly modernist verse styles.

Dr. Francisco Javier Rubio Munoz

BA, MA, PhD Universidad de Salamanca

Dr. Munoz is a researcher and instructor at the University of Salamanca, where he is based in the Department of Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary History. His current project is in comparative history, focusing on Spanish and Ibero-American Universities during the Golden Age. Dr. Munoz is a member of the prestigious “Alfonso IX,” a research group at the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Institute in Salamanca.

Dr. Daniel Jordan
British History

BA University College Dublin, PhD University College Dublin

Dr. Jordan wrote a doctorate in 17th century British History at University College, Dublin, and as a Visiting Scholar at Hertford College in the University of Oxford. He is a published historian and has had articles featured in The Journal of the Butler Society and The History Review, for the latter of which he has also served as Senior Editor. He has delivered papers to conferences and societies, such as the Irish Historical Society, and taught high-school level students in both Dublin and Oxford. His research interests include the social history of the British aristocracy and the history of material and court culture.

Dr. Tugba Kalafatoglu
International Business

BS University of Nebraska, MBA Georgetown University, PhD ESADE Business School

Dr. Kalafatoglu’s research covers strategy, international business, social entrepreneurship, research methods, and cross-cultural management. She is the Founder and President of Vote Women in Politics; President of Tugba Kalafatoglu & Associates, an international consulting firm; as well as an international author, who has written books and chapters about “City Branding”, published in China, and “Globalization”, in the USA.

Dr. Slobodan Kapor

MSc, MD, University of Belgrade

Slobodan is an expert in neuroscience and neurophysiology. His research has tackled subjects as diverse as the anatomy of the nervous system, embryology, and molecular biology. He is a decorated scholar who has been published in dozens of medical journals, and who holds prizes from the International Brain Research Organization.

Tom Kielbasa

Sous chef, La bête noire Paris; Professional training at Ferrardi Paris - Pastry and Bakery

Tom is a professional chef in Paris. His main passions are the history of food, cooking, and pastry, but in his recent role as sous chef of the restaurant La bête noire Paris, he’s developing a whole range of delicatessen products. He completed his formal training in Paris at the School of Culinary Art Ferrandi and also worked in Australia. He learned the art of pastry from some of the most well-known masters at Stohrer, Cyril Lignac, and Adriano Zumbo.

Dr. Maddalena Marini

MS University of Padua, PhD University of Modena and Reggio Emilia

Dr. Marini is a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. She is interested in the factors that influence our unconscious behaviors (like our implicit social beliefs), and the conditions under which these unintentional behaviors can become malleable. To address this issue, she uses different techniques, including behavioral paradigms, event-related potentials (ERPs) and non-invasive brain stimulation (like transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation).

Joseph McAulay

LLB University of Edinburgh, MSc University of Oxford

Joseph is a doctoral researcher in Criminology at the University of Oxford. He has worked on a number of research projects for the University of Oxford’s Pro Bono Publico free law research clinic as a research assistant. Prior to beginning his doctorate, Joseph completed an MSc in Criminology & Criminal Justice at the Centre for Criminology in Oxford, achieving a rare Distinction. He was also awarded the McClintock Prize in Criminology for achieving the highest mark in a criminological subject.

Dr. Luis Melian Rodriguez

Dr. Rodriguez has given courses in political science at the University of Salamanca. His research focuses on the Arab world: democracy, political change, and investigating the unique cases of Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan during and after the Arab Spring.

Meidiha Ouzal

BA Faculté des sciences de Montpellier, MS Faculté des sciences de Montpellier

Meidiha is a trained nurse and midwife, but her main passions are research, journalism, and teaching. She plans to conduct research and write scientific articles that will be accessible to the general public. Her courses on Medicine integrate practical hands-on aspects, such as taking patient histories, checking vital signs, and advances in music therapy.

Dr. Vanessa Palomo Berjaga
Perfecting the Spanish Language

BA, MA, PhD Universitat Pompeu Fabra

Vanessa Palomo Berjaga has a doctorate in Translation and Language. Her research interest is literary translation, especially the translation of Shakespeare’s plays into Catalan. In her PhD thesis, she analyzes Josep Maria de Sagarra’s translation of Macbeth.

Carmen Paula Garcia Navarro
Perfeccionamiento de la Lengua

MA Universidad de Salamanca

Carmen researches and lectures regularly on the history of comedy, comic books, and graphic novels. She originally hails from Alicante but has been teaching Spanish language in Salamanca since 2014.

Marine Petit
French Language

BA Université Paul Valéry, MA Université du Maine

Marine is a native of Montpellier. While she holds a Masters in teaching French as a foreign language, her academic background makes her unique as she is also a trained artist and art historian. She brings her love and knowledge of art history into her language courses. She is also a passionate chef, so she has taught some gastronomy workshops for our students, which offer them new cooking skills while at the same time reinforcing their language and conversation skills.

Dr. Barthelemy Py

Barthélémy teaches Cinema and Media Studies at the Université de Montpellier. His doctoral research investigated mountain films and their relationship to the Occident.

Kristian Saull

MEng Loughborough University, PhD University of Cambridge

Kristian is a supervisor for five different colleges at the University of Cambridge, where he also works as a researcher. He is currently making mathematical models of the human heart, designed to help physicians in their assessment of the heart’s function. Kristian’s expertise is in mechanical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, and a number of coding languages.

Lora Uhlig
International Relations

Lora completed her MPhil in Russian and East European Studies at St. Antony's College, Oxford. She is interested in looking at issues of national identity in Russian foreign policy, and she also attended The Oxford Tradition as a student as a high school student.

Diego Valdes

Diego is the Director General of the Sports Business Institute in Barcelona. He is a Sports Marketing and Communication Consultant. Current and former clients have included executives from organizations such as FIFA, the Premier League, La Liga, Manchester United, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, West Ham United, Newcastle United, Wembley Stadium, Major League Soccer (MLS), Galatasaray SK, Inter Milan, Wolverhampton FC, the Mexican Football Federation,, IMG, and Western Sydney Wanderers, among many other clubs, federations, media outlets, and player representation agencies worldwide.

Angela Vallori
Fashion and Design

BA Universidadd de Barcelona

Angela is a fashion and graphic designer who has her own brand called XICOIA. She is a costume designer for film, TV and opera, and teaches design courses in her spare time.

Dr. Tijn Van Winden

Doctor of Medicine, Universiteit van Amsterdam

Dr. Van Winden teaches human anatomy to first- and fourth-year medical students at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. When he is not teaching, he is conducting research for his PhD on preterm labor. Dr. Van Winden is a regular volunteer at the Children’s Hospital in Amsterdam, as well as an avid web designer in his free time.

Pierre-Antoine Vettorello

BA, MA Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp

Pierre-Antoine manages and designs for his own fashion label. His garments seek to mix precision and creativity, poetry and drama. "Vice" magazine has praised them for their "intriguing peeks into a fantastical world." He trained at the Royal Academy in Antwerp and has worked with an array of famous designers, including Zac Posen in New York. Pierre-Antoine regularly gives lectures on fashion history in museums across Europe.

Luke Wallis
Creative Writing

BA, MA Goldsmiths, University of London

Luke is a published writer and a graduate of the prestigious Creative Writing course at Goldsmiths. His poetry and short fiction has been widely published. He is currently working on his first full-length novel. He also teaches English at St. Patrick’s College in London, an institution dedicated to widening participation in literature, where he is responsible for students aged 18 to 80, from Bangladesh to Botswana, from Hungary to Hackney.

Georgia Williams

BSc University of Chichester, MSc London School of Economics

Georgia is a specialist in the psychology of gender development and identity. She has been invited to present her findings at academic conferences held everywhere from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to the Glasgow School of Art. She has taught students up to postgraduate level; and she also has corporate experience, having worked as a consultant organizational psychologist for one of Britain’s biggest realty companies.
