La Escuela Preparatoria de Barcelona - The Program

July 5 - July 31, 2012

“The cultural capital of Spain, the place you had to be to breathe anticipation of the freedom to come. And, in a sense, it was also the cultural capital of Latin America because of the number of painters, writers, publishers, and artists from Latin American countries who either settled in or traveled back and forth to Barcelona” –Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa

La Escuela Preparatoria de Barcelona is an academic program for students in grades 8-9 held in Collegi Major Sant Jordi, one of the most sought-after university residences in Barcelona, Spain.

There are fourteen courses available, including courses in English, such as Creative Writing, Marine Biology, and Spain in the Literary World, and in Spanish, such as Spanish Language, Barcelona: Artes y letres, and Relaciones Internacionales.

The international faculty includes scholars and academics, as well as creative professionals – artists and writers – from Barcelona and elsewhere.

Together with program administrators, including Program Deans and Activities Directors, students enjoy a daily schedule that combines intellectual and curricular adventure, cultural enrichment, field trips, guest speakers, activities and sports – all in a safe, supervised environment.

We offer intensive Spanish language at all levels – from pure beginner to advanced and even fluent – as well as a selection of courses in English. Whatever their priorities, students come away with a new understanding of their subject matter as well as an expert familiarity with Barcelona.

Our philosophy of español primero makes it a goal for everyone to use as much Spanish as possible both in and out of the classroom, by encouraging students to speak Spanish first when addressing staff members, in the dining hall, during activities and field trips, and when participating in all program events. The hope is to improve everyone's Spanish and to make everyone feel comfortable in a Spanish-speaking environment. Students can also opt to travel to Madrid for five days after the program, in order to extend their language-learning experience in the Spanish capital.
