Students on the New York College Seminar stay at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City. Barnard College sits in Morningside Heights, a neighborhood just north of the Upper West Side, minutes from the bustle of Midtown, and a short walk from the Hudson River, Riverside Park, and the urban oasis of Central Park. On campus students can enjoy a picnic on the lawns, exercise in the gym at Columbia University, and relax with friends in the seventeenth floor lounge while taking in the breathtaking views of the New York skyline. 


Students choose a Major and five different workshops, one each day. Major courses meet every morning for three and-a-half hours, workshops meet for two hours every afternoon. Possible courses include:

• International Relations
• Psychology
• Public Speaking

Talks and Seminars

In the early evening, students attend talks by leading academics and take part in college application workshops. Topics that have been addressed in past lectures have included various approaches to critical thinking and the role literature has played in forming opinion. College application workshops have addressed how to create the best university application; how to prepare for interviews; how to write the best college essay; and - importantly - what to expect from university.

Cultural Enrichment

When not in class, students are taken on a range of educational visits to universities including NYU and Columbia; they visit famous sites and museums; go on tours of world-famous neighborhoods; and enjoy a range of fun and recreational activities. Past destinations have included the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and the Frick; Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, Greenwich Village, SoHo, Fifth Avenue, and Central Park; baseball and soccer matches; and much more.
