Oxbridge Academy in Boston and Oxbridge Academy at Yale

Oxbridge Academies offer summer study programs for high school students seeking academic and cultural enrichment, on the campuses of Harvard Law School in Boston, and Yale University in New Haven.

Students choose one Concentration in an academic subject such as Business or Economics, International Relations or Augmented Reality which meets in the mornings, and then on alternating afternoons they follow a Workshop which helps them prepare their college applications.

Beyond the courses, students have the chance to visit two local universities each week, and to participate in a range of activities in town, from museum visits and historical walking tours to shopping and beach trips. Guest speakers address the students each week, to give them insight into their future career choices.

General

The Academies provide students with a pre-college experience: the chance to take courses at the university level, to live in the same residence halls that university students live in during the year, and to gain confidence in their public speaking and presentation skills, which give them an edge on their college applications.

Session I: Oxbridge Academy in Boston

On the campus of Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

July 8 - July 21, 2018

At the Oxbridge Academy in Boston, students choose to follow one of the following Concentrations:

1. International Relations:

Taking advantage of the program’s proximity to the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, this course addresses International Relations through its theoretical bases and by focusing on key current issues. Subjects covered include globalization and its political, economic, and social effects; environmental challenges; new forms of war and peace; the changing nature of security challenges; mass-migration; the complexities of areas like the Middle East and South-East Asia; and the relationships and rivalries that define global order today. The course culminates in a Model United Nations session.

2. Business:

Students gain insight into how consultants help businesses tackle challenges and improve performance. They discover the instruments and institutions that make up modern finance and are vital to budding entrepreneurs and businesses all over the world. From principles of finance, such as compound interest, time value of money, and portfolio theory, they move on to how finance and financial markets actually work. They address the main business principles of strategic planning, marketing, economics, finance, and accounting. Concepts covered include SWOT analysis, developing a marketing strategy, as well as working through how to create a product-centered company.

In addition to the above courses, all students follow the Public Speaking Workshop on alternating afternoons:

Public Speaking:

In 21st-century working life, everyone will at some point be asked to deliver a presentation, regardless of their occupation. Students learn how to prepare and deliver compelling speeches to large and critical audiences. The syllabus covers the core principles of communication and techniques for overcoming speech anxiety. Students learn how to structure and organize information, gain decision-making skills, and acquire knowledge of how to present their ideas effectively. Not only will this course help them prepare the business plan pitches and UN arguments that they will present for their Concentration, but it will also help them with the college interview process.

College Visits and Activities

Students who attend this Session will have the chance to visit the following universities:

MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Boston University

Boston College

Northeastern

In their free time, students will explore Boston and Cambridge with local university students. A sampling of optional activities could include: beach trips, shopping trips, a walking tour of the historic Freedom Trail, movie nights, and a Red Sox baseball game.

Session II: Oxbridge Academy at Yale

On the campus of Yale University, in New Haven, Connecticut.

July 22 - August 4, 2018

At the Oxbridge Academy at Yale, students choose to follow one of the following Concentrations:

1. augmented reality game design:

Students will design and make their own Augmented Reality game in Unity3D game engine, learning skills such as game design, C# programming, and animation in a highly interactive and exciting process. Students will learn game design fundamentals, which they’ll put into practice in their own virtual world, complete with complex models, props, and mechanics. By participating in this course, students train their logic and design skills, and innovative thinking capabilities. After learning about scripts and tools for special effects and AR implementation, students will receive a copy of the game, along with their original designs, so that they can continue creating long after the course has finished.

2. Economics:

Studying on the campus that produced some of the most famous Economists in history, from Paul Krugman to Janet Yellen, students discover the economic institutions that affect all our lives, learn how they have changed over time, and the consequences of these changes. They develop a comprehensive grasp of contemporary economic and social institutions ("capitalism", "globalization," "the market") and their potential futures, not least by exploring their historical development. Finally, they move on to address foundational concepts, principles, and assumptions of the dominant neoclassical economic theory (micro and macro).

In addition to the above courses, all students follow the College Application Skills Workshop on alternating afternoons:

College Application Skills:

This workshop helps students stand out in an increasingly competitive application process. Seminar sessions teach them how to tell their story, build their brand, and pitch compelling applications to admissions officers. The course helps them look beyond rankings in order to decide what type of school is the best fit. Bearing in mind that a valuable college experience goes beyond the classroom, the course also focuses on other important factors. While developing their application materials, students learn how to think, write, debate, negotiate, and present at a collegiate level.
